Vacuum Kiln Drying Service
We offer wood drying services with our state-of-the-art iDry Plus vacuum kiln, accommodating a capacity of 3500 board feet, widths up to 5 feet, and lengths up to 16 feet. The new vacuum technology allows wood to be dried faster and at a lower temperature, minimizing checking and other damage to the wood, resulting in a higher yield.
There are multiple reasons to kiln dry your wood, even if it has been sitting in a barn for decades. Our homes are more climate controlled now than ever, with large fluctuations in relative humidity between the summer and winter months. Wood will naturally equalize in moisture content to the surrounding environment. As wet wood dries out to the relatively low humidity inside your home, it might crack, bow, and warp as bound moisture is released from the wood cells.
Using our kiln to dry your wood helps prevent this damage during the drying process. We dry the wood in a steady controlled manner, under tension to reduce disfiguring. Our kiln utilizes a vacuum pump and chamber, which pulls moisture from the inside of the wood before the outside dries out. This keeps the outside wet until the inside is dry, minimizing checking and splitting. After the bound moisture is removed from the wood cells, wood can more easily acclimate to the surroundings (absorb and release free moisture) with minimal damage. Our kiln can dry wood down to the ±8% MC required for furniture making.
Our kiln cycles end with several days at 160°F, which will kill bugs or eggs that may be in your wood. This sanitizes the wood and makes it safe to bring in your home or transport.
